Shoes Complete the Dress

Donna Ilario of Mr. Louis Bridal Shoes sat down with Wedtro for a Q and A session on shoes.

Q:  Vera Wang said it best, "As it (your shoes) elongates the figure, it should be a decorative element in its' own right - not merely a white shoe - even if it is barely visible beneath a floor length gown.  Do you agree with this, and if so, why?

A:  Absolutely!  Your wedding day is a once in a lifetime event.  An inappropriate pair of shoes can make even the most elegant dress look ordinary and inexpensive.  You would not want your guests' eye to be drawn down to your mismatched footwear.

Q:  Not all brides are 5'10 and although many may not care to be so, there are always those that swear by stilettos in achieving the height and style that they desire for their wedding day.  Is there an alternative for those who don't care to sacrafice comfort for style?

A:  Height isn't a pre-requisite for your wedding day.  Many times, brides wear veils and headwear that make them seem taller.  One shouldn't have to compromise comfort for height with a well fitted shoe.

Q:  Cocktail dresses are being splashed throughout the pages of bridal and fashion magazines.  Do you have any shoe recommendations for brides interested in having their bridesmaids wear shorter dresses?

A:  It is crucial that all of the bridesmaids have matching shoes, preferably dyed to match their dresses.  There is nothing worse than seeing a group of bridesmaids who are identically dressed, until you get to the shoes.  It draws your eye right to the dirfference and they stick out like a sore thumb!

Q:  Are there any recommendations for the more traditional bride, whose interest is in just matching her shoe to her dress?

A:  Yes.  These days, brides are not only matching their shoes to their dresses, but are also adorning them with sequins, pearls, rhinestones, etc. to make their gowns more glamorous.  They really are beautiful.

Q:  What tips could you offer a bride before setting out on her bridal shoe exploration?

A:  First, make sure you try your shoes on.  A good fit is mandatory.  Some of the prettiest shoes may not be comfortable.  Second, keep your bridesmaids in mind.  For example, you wouldn't want to place young attendants in high heels.  Also, give yourself plenty of time to make a decision.  Consider shopping with only your mother or your maid of honor.  Many times, it is just too difficult to please all of your bridesmaids.

Donna wanted to leave the brides with this last bit of advice- Just remember, it's your wedding!
